‘Pasted’ in Milan

‘Pasted’ is the second time London’s Serpentine Galleries have collaborated with la Rinascente in Milan on a special commission, filling the piazza Duomo frontage of the department store in an exhibition coinciding with the annual Salone del Mobile design week.

Libby Sellers curates this year, and has put together set designers, choreographers and dancers to work with, and respond to, the Serpentine Galleries’ new Wallpaper Collection, a set of wallpapers designed by artists and architects including Ai Weiwei, SANAA, John Baldassari and Lawrence Weiner.

The Wallpaper Collection is the gallery’s continuation of a significant history of artists’ wallpapers and Pasted manages to provide a unique take on this necessarily ‘flat’ subject, resisting the temptation to simply paste the paper and opting instead to work with it in innovative, unusual, and revealing ways.

Three specially commissioned dances, choreographed by Malgorzata Dzierzon and directed by Flavia Rittner, show on large projections while a series of site-specific installations by emerging set designers and paper sculptors – Lydia Shirreff, Anna Lomax, Carrie Louise and PLP – together provide responses and takes both on the wallpaper designs as well as the physicality of the wallpaper itself.

You can see the films on the Serpentine Galleries’ website.
